Happy First Anniversary!

A year ago today, Mike and I closed on our cute little split-level in Henrietta. Little did we know we had so much work ahead of us in the coming year, but it’s been totally worth it so far. On that historic day, full of aspirations and excitment, we sat on the blue-carpet-clad step to our sunken living room with Lance and Phaedra giving out Halloween candy in an empty house. With the thick lingering smell of old folks, we downed cider and ate Tim Bits and Papa John’s. I burned insense to mask the heavy musk in the air. Since we couldn’t get the motion sensor on the front light to turn off, each of us took turns running outside waving when the light went out. Ah, the memories…

This year’s festivities were not without incident. All day today, we’ve been coming down from our post-Halloween-party trauma, but that’s a story for another entry. :) The evening has been somewhat non-ceremonious, but fun nonetheless. Earlier in the week, I made a man out of the mounds of leaves that fell prematurely from our “black-spot” maple. Crowned with a 4-dollar mask I got from Walmart, I must say, he made a frightening watchman for our front porch. Lots of the kids who came for their sugar fix thought he was real, and my heart leapt for joy as a tiny Spider man walked away saying, “Dude, I think I thought I saw his eyes move!” It’s the little things, really.

9:00 rolled around, and I thought we had seen our last group of kids, but when the doorbell rang at 9:15, I was not prepared for what I was about to see. I approached the door and saw three non-costumed teens (two girls and a boy) dressed in the least reflective clothing they could find. One of the girls was sitting on my leaf-man’s lap giggling with her tongue in his mouth! She took advantage of the poor guy before my very eyes. THE HORROR! Out of fear for getting my house egged, I reluctantly gave them candy and turned out the light. Away you hussies! We’ll be having no more of that.
