Top 5 Dream Jobs?
So, I know my friend Kris posted the same topic, but it seems appropriate for me since I sort of had a nervous breakdown about my career on Tuesday night. It could be that I’m just hormonal, but I’ve had this empty feeling lately. It’s something I felt even more strongly when I was working full time — possibly because I was extremely underutilized and unfulfilled, but that’s a story for another time. Nevertheless, being home has started me thinking about my dreams. Some of these jobs are totally off-the-wall, so don’t judge! In no particular order:
- Librararian: I watched Design Sponge’s short film series called “Design by the Book” and thought that it would be really cool to have the job of helping people find things in the library (clarification: a big awesome library, not my po-dunk local library). Also, I posted a while back about how much I love libraries. Maybe it’s the nostalgia, maybe it’s the idea of looking for a needle in the haystack, the excitement of the treasure-hunt, who knows! I highly suggest watching the whole series.
- Metalsmith: In college, I toyed with the idea of changing majors to Metals. Sometimes I still regret not making that change. I love getting my hands dirty, and the problem-solving it involved. My biggest obstacle to doing it now is the lack of money for supplies. I would need a torch, a well-ventilated area to work and a whole slew of tools. Oh yeah, and there’s the small matter of having people who want to buy your stuff! I have beading and stringing tools, but it’s not an adequate substitute.
- WordPress Developer: And I’m not just talking about the hack-job crap that I do. What I wouldn’t give to be able to build a site from scratch. Right now, I bumble around and beg/borrow/steal elements from others, hoping that it will work in the end. I enjoy the challenge, and I really loved programming in college (NERD!). Unfortunately, I learned Lingo: a very dead language for Macromedia Director. So my skills are sort of lacking there… OK, this “dream job” is a little lame. Sorry! Perhaps I need to rethink this one.
- Dressmaker or Costume Designer: Wouldn’t it be great if I had the skills to crank out original clothing for people on TV or movies!? Alas, I don’t really have that. But I love sewing and designing my own costumes. I should probably work on those skills anyway — even if it means I only make things for myself. Check out these two awesome interviews on Threadbanger
- Egyptologist: Or any kind of ancient art historian for that matter. Maybe curating in a museum or something… I’m sure I have a very romantic notion of what it’s like, but I’ll keep my deluded ideals. Thank you very much.
