The Shining

You may think I’ve been living under a rock for admitting this, but until last night I had never seen “The Shining”. Mike and I have been been lining up a bunch of horror flicks on our Netflix queue leading up to Halloween. I really enjoyed the movie, and I’m glad that I finally agreed to watch it. Contrary to what you might believe, I don’t consider myself a true horror fan. With such a love for Halloween, you’d think I’d be all over that… Actually, let me rephrase that; now that I’ve had a chance to think about this a little, I do like horror movies. I’m just very selective about the ones I agree to watch and someone usually has to coerce me into watching them. You see, I don’t like getting TOO scared, so I avoid the ones that seem over-the-top. But I’ve seen the Exorcist, and that scared me out of my mind, so there goes that theory! Anyway, roll the clip:

I’m not going to go into a long interpretation of the movie, because, quite frankly, it’s already been done. But I will say that we sat around talking about it for quite a while after it was over — the sign of a good movie. I was definitely scared watching it; on more than one occasion I reached out a clammy hand to grab onto Mike. However it did not scare me nearly as much as the Exorcist! I’m looking forward to getting the next movie on the Netflix list, but I’ll save that for another day. ;)

The Exorcist! I think it was in 1974. Living in San Francisco. Marina District. Studio appartment. Had just seen the movie with a friend. That night . . . and I am not making this up . . . after having to hide my eyes during some parts of the Exorcist, that night I was awakened by, literally, the shaking of the bed. We had a smallish earthquake in the city that night and the shaking bed woke me up. OMG!! Of course the movie QUICKLY came to mind and I spent the rest of the night with all the lights on. I will NEVER forget it. I really hate scary movies unless it’s King Kong or some big lizzard. Those aren’t really real. But if it’s scarry and close to real, that’s it . . .

Re: Don OMG, I think I would have had a coronary! That movie is seriously screwed up. I saw the directors cut or some such thing… It had extra scenes that were either too scary or too controversial. Just thinking about it gives me the willies!

the first time i saw the shining was during a snowstorm. paul did that to me on purpose; can you imagine? and i’m such a big baby about horror movies, too.

Re: Chris I just imagine Paul saying, “Oh hey, I’ve got cabin fever let’s watch ‘The Shining’, it’ll be fun!” LOL!!

You should pick up a copy of the book and read it. :)

The movie was a disappointment because I read the book first, which scared me way more than the movie. Check out “Haunted”(Netflix has it) starring Aidan Quinn or “1408″ with John Cusack(I preferred the director’s cut ending) for very creepy ghost stories. BOO!
