Here we are: Day 2 in the Countdown to Halloween, and I’m already waiting till the last minute! Anyway, today I’m revealing my costume idea for this year. In some previous years, I’ve kept my costume a secret until the big day, but to hell with secrecy this year. I’m going as a “Gothic Victorian”. Here’s my sketch of what it’s going to look like (sort of). Pardon the crappy image: I was too lazy to drag out the scanner, so I photographed my drawing instead. :)

For me 50% of the joy of Halloween is in the costume making. I go to great lengths to put together the “perfect” costume, and this year is no exception. Also, since I’m out of work, I’m trying very hard to keep the materials to a minimum and trying to shop the Goodwill for modifiable pieces. Also remember that corset I bought for last year’s costume and never used?? Well long story short, I ended up exchanging it for a gorgeous black one, and will be making good use of it this year for sure.

I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from the Japanese trend called Gothic Lolita or Elegant Gothic Aristocrat, and there’s no shortage of internet resources on the subject. One of my favorite sites is Fan Plus Friend. They’ve got some beautiful, well-made garments for sale, and I’m borrowing a lot of aspects for my costume. I just love all the lacy ruffles and girly details.

Pretty Ruffles!

The Mister is also going as a Gothic Victorian with a Steampunk twist. Not sure what the twist is going to be, but he’s in charge of his accessories. I just have to make his vest (already 50% done). He’ll probably be throwing something together the week of the party. He’s such a procrastinator. :) Stay tuned throughout the month for more costume construction progress!
