Lesson in Fabric Weight
So this is my latest creation: the shiny shapeless sack.
How’s that for alliteration of S-words!? Anyway, I had been shopping at JoAnne for some fabric to make a dress (a project that is henceforth on hold) and I saw this fun, shimmery fabric on the clearance pile. I thought it would be perfect material for a pretty holiday blouse. Then I was searching for the ultimate pattern for aforementioned blouse. I couldn’t find much that I liked in ALL the books I thumbed thru. Finally, I settled on Simplicity 2594, mostly because Simplicity patterns were a dollar that week.
The first thing I realized when I started working was that the shimmery fabric was much too heavy for this pattern. It reminds me of the satin pajamas I used to have when I was a kid. The kind where the reverse side of the satin was soft and flannel-like. This isn’t quite that heavy, but it has the same soft warmth to the back. The second thing was that I added about 2 inches to the length of the pattern, but I think it’s still a bit shorter than I’d like it.
All in all, it wasn’t a difficult pattern, and I might try it again sometime with a sheer fabric. I’ll probably still wear the blouse for holiday parties, but it definitely needs a belt. I opted not to make the belt because the shiny face of the fabric wouldn’t knot very well. But I could easily make one out of a contrasting fabric. Also, it doesn’t look too bad layered with a fitted tee underneath.
i hate when fabric doesn’t work out right!! I like the pattern though, and the belt addition is a great idea :)
