In preparation for our party this year we wanted to spruce up the old bar in the den. A couple of years ago, I got this great piece of furniture that was headed for the dumpster at my old job. It was perfect bar height, and all it needed was a top. We threw on a temporary top from scrap we had laying around and for the past 2 years it remained this way. It served it’s purpose, but we’ve been talking about taking it to the next level.

First, the temporary fiber-board top had to go! After some deliberation about what we should do for the new bar top, we discovered that Lowe’s sells unfinished table tops. Much to our delight, they sell one at the EXACT size we needed. I threw on a coat of Minwax stain in “Pecan”, a couple of coats of urethane, and BAM! Perfect bar top.

We have several leftover bamboo rolls sitting in the garage from our fence, so we wanted create the perfect tiki bar with some of the extra. Somehow, I didn’t think the white Formica peeking out from behind the bamboo would look too good, so we decided to spray-paint the face and sides of the bar a dark brown color. When that was dry, we placed our bamboo roll in position, pre-drilled the holes, and attached it with screws to the base. DONE!

The finishing touch was a set of stools that I bought on craigslist. We finally have the bar we’ve been talking about for years — and in time for the party!
