Backsplash Blitz

I thought from the beginning of this God Forsaken Project that I wanted to go with the same stainless backsplash that our old kitchen had, but I couldn’t salvage most of the old tiles when I took them off. Bummer, dude. The previous homeowners left us a bunch of extra tiles – which would have been great, but unfortunately for us they’re not a standard size and there aren’t nearly enough. It’s funny, actually: they must have had that backsplash for many, many years (probably original) because the packaging from the extra tiles has the store name Two Guys – a store that has been largely out of business since 1982. Incidentally, it’s the same store chain where I got my head stuck between the bars at the check-out aisle and the fire department had to come to my rescue. But, I digress.

So I found a site that sells standard 4” tiles, but at a lofty price tag. The project would cost us just about 900 bucks without installation. Yowsers! Some searching on the computer internet gave me a few different options that were less expensive. Mike and I agreed that we like this one the best because it gives us a little bit of the stainless steel action and also brightens up the wall since we’ve opted for a luscious dark countertop — plus it’ll save us about 250 bucks. At first Mike was a little wary of the tile, but I showed him this photo of someone else’s project using the same tile, and he liked it.

Then I did some quick Photoshop work to make it look more like our colors, and he was sold.

Jokingly, Mike said, “When did we get a Kitchen Aid mixer?” (the yellow appliance sitting on the countertop.) Then, he said, “What’s that thing behind it?” Squinting, I tried to visualize the blue and red blob in the background into focus. “It looks like… hmm… a Wonder Woman Cookie Jar!” Awesome.
